The Heart Cut - Westward Distillery American Single Malt Whisky

THIS MADE THE CUT BECAUSE

The newly emerged American Single Malt Whiskey category is gaining momentum, and there’s one distillery we’ve had eyes on since the start. Hailing from the American Northwest, an area abundant with barley, Westward Whiskey in Portland, Oregon, crafts an incredibly balanced and fruit-forward single malt whiskey.

This cask blew us away with its super juicy and tropical character. Enjoyed straight or paired with an American Pale Ale, it’s a whiskey that just gets better with every sip. Enjoy!

PAIRING SUGGESTIONS

You’re spoilt for choice for beer pairings with this Westward cask! As the team use Ale yeast for Fermentation, this features prominently in the overall character of the whiskey.  Miles Monroe recommends a Helles or Vienna Lager…’For UK beers I'd say Brixton APA, Meantime's Greenwich Lager, Prime Pale or Yakima Red; the Yakima is especially fun because it's made with hops from the Yakima Valley which is just a few hours north of Westward.’ ENJOY!

OTHER COOL THINGS ABOUT THIS WHISKY

American Single Malt Whiskey. With the rise of American Single Malt, distillers found there was a need for guidelines to define what it is and, more importantly, what it isn’t. So, in 2016, Westward helped create the American Single Malt Whiskey Commission to establish, promote, and protect the category and its legacy.

Amongst the guidelines, the whiskey must be : made from 100% malted barley, at one distillery, in the USA; matured in oak casks; and bottled at over 40% abv.

Bottled-in-Bond. Bottled-in-bond is an American Whiskey classification that speaks to a whiskey's provenance and location. To be labelled as such, the whiskey must be aged for a minimum of four years, bottled at exactly 50%abv, made in a single distillery (so not a blend of distilleries) in one season, and must be aged in a bonded warehouse.
